Eastern Plays

Eastern Plays Bulgarian , Iztochni piesi is a 2009 Bulgarian drama film. The featurelength debut of young Bulgarian director, La Fmis graduate Kamen Kalev, Eastern Plays features Hristo Hristov, Ovanes Torosyan, Saadet Aksoy and Nikolina Yancheva. The film debuted at the 2009 Cannes Film Festivals Directors Fortnight, though regular showings in Bulgaria began onOctober 2009.

As well a screenwriter and director, Kamen Kalev coproduced the movie along with Stefan Pirjov through their partnership production company Waterfront Film. Other film production houses that coproduced the movies were Chimney Pot, the Swedish Film i Vst and Art Eternal Bulgaria.A large part of the cast of Eastern Plays were nonprofessionals, including debutant male lead Hristo Hristov who plays himself in the film and who died from a drug overdose towards the end of filming. Hristovs actual apartment is shown in the film, as are his drawings and the woodcarving workshop he works at. Nikolina Yancheva, an actress in Stefan Danailovs class at the Krastyo Sarafov National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts, also plays herself in the film. Turkish actress Saadet Il Aksoy lends her name to her character in Eastern Plays. ........
